A Start on Scenery

Small update today, but an important one as I am finally getting a start on scenery! The plan for most of the layout’s topography is to shape green, open cell florist foam into the rough shape I need and then to blend those pieces together with the benchwork using trimmed down sheets of plaster cloth. This should give me a good, lightweight base to begin planting trees and adding all the additional fine scenery details required.

Sheets of florist foam can be rather pricey, but I’ve been slowly building a large collection over the past ten years knowing that I’d be needing it one day on a future layout. I should have enough now to finish the entire layout and then some!

I’ve only just started in on the project, but I immediately ran into an issue of trying to use inferior tools to shape the foam. The consequences of doing so caused me to suffer several deep gashes. Important lesson: When it comes to cutting tools, make sure you have the proper tool for the job. Don’t just grab whatever is lying around and assume it will be good enough!
