Beginning the Base Layer

In recent days I’ve been able to lay down the most basic, base layer of scenery on the Sandpoint portion of the layout. Obviously, I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me before the scene is complete, but I’m happy with the results so far.

I’m modeling late winter/early spring which can be very tricky as nearly every scenery product out there is just way too green or way too yellow to be of much use to me. Looks like my airbrush will be getting a good workout with this project!

I started by laying down a base layer of latex paint and covered that with layers of fine Woodland Scenics ground foam in soil, earth, and yellow grass colors. After securing the ground foam in place with scenic cement, I used an airbrush to apply a tan color as well as a mud color I made by mixing together several craft paints to achieve the look of wet soil I was looking for.

The combination of the foam color with the airbrushed color resulted in a nice, realistic look that wasn’t too uniform in tone.

I also finally got a chance to grind up some leaves I gathered from my yard several years ago to make a forest floor with. Those will get layered in along with static grass and additional scenic details soon.
