Rubber Rocks

Scenery continued to progress in the Sandpoint area of the layout as rubber rocks by Cripplebush Valley Models were glued into place. I like using these pre-made rocks for large areas of rockwork as in the past I’ve found it difficult to create a convincing rock face by piecing together smaller molds in a puzzle-like manner.

Before gluing down the rocks, I first laid down a couple layers of plaster cloth to fill gaps and smooth transition. This is a new technique for me and I found it a pretty simple and not terribly messy process.

Next steps were to go in with some plaster of paris to fill in the remaining holes and blend the rockwork into the rest of the scene. After that I’ll took an airbrush and some paints to the rock face to give it a look that is more prototypical to the area I am modeling. A final few washes of dark browns and blacks followed up with a drybrushing of light colors finished off the scene nicely. The great thing about a rock face like this is that they naturally have so much variation and randomness that it really is very hard to screw it up.
